Use case: illustration-story.
Asset type: a single wide panoramic editorial header illustration for the essay Communion, about 2.4:1 aspect ratio. No text.
Input image: the attached dog photograph is an IDENTITY REFERENCE for the two real dogs, not a reference for the medium or composition. Astro is the LARGER, taller dog sitting upright at the RIGHT: charcoal-black, shaggy curly coat, floppy ears, dark eyes, broad rounded furry muzzle with subtle gray, long torso, dark collar with a little warm-colored tag. Doc is the SMALLER dog at the LEFT: low compact body, dark gray shaggy coat, distinct silver-gray beard and eyebrows and pale gray front paws, floppy ears, round dark eyes, hanging collar tag. Preserve their recognizable facial hair, markings, size difference, and natural canine anatomy while drawing them as expressive underground comic characters. They are not retrievers or terriers with pointed ears.
Primary request: radically reinterpret the previous welcoming-table concept as gritty, intelligent, surreal underground comix / vintage pulp comic art. Much less literal. The sense is 'there is room for you here,' but mysterious, wry, and slightly unruly rather than sweet. No dining table, place settings, laptop, or cozy dinner scene.
Scene and visual idea: the two dogs sit together on a scrap of patterned rug at an impossible threshold. Doc sits low at the left, Astro taller at the right, both regarding the viewer with their real dogs' solemn, slightly skeptical personalities. Around and above them curls a huge irregular shared thought-cloud made from thick black ink, winding organic contours and broken signal lines. Within the cloud, a fragment of a human profile, a circuit-like labyrinth, and a few impossible doorways emerge from the SAME continuous ink marks. These motifs should feel half-discovered, like different minds briefly sharing a space, not separate explanatory icons. Leave the curling shape open toward the viewer: an invitation into their strange little gathering. The dogs remain the clearly readable anchor, with strong silhouettes and recognizable faces.
Style/medium: an actual hand-drawn underground comic splash panel, bold expressive black brush inking, scratchy pen crosshatching, irregular contour lines, coarse halftone dots, imperfect overprinted spot colors and worn cheap paper. Flat graphic forms, beautifully rough, confident drawing with adult editorial sophistication. This must visibly look like printed COMIC ART, not a painting or a filtered photograph. No artist imitation is requested.
Palette: aged dirty-cream paper, dense ink black / midnight indigo, burnt amber / acid ochre, restrained dirty magenta and electric blue spot accents. Strong contrast, large black shadow shapes, plenty of raw paper. A little late-night psychedelic pulp energy, an affectionate deadpan mood, not horror or menace.
Composition: one continuous widescreen scene, no panel grid, no cover layout, no border. Crop-safe central dog faces; generous breathing room around the irregular shared thought-cloud. The image should read at header size and reward close inspection.
Avoid: lettering, title, captions, speech text, logos, watermarks, photorealism, 3D rendering, smooth glossy gradients, sentimental greeting-card aesthetics, golden-hour lifestyle advertising, hearts, halos, literal ghost souls, robot heads, glowing brains, human clothing on dogs, exaggerated smiling dog faces.
